HMS Echo (1827) (6th)

This the sixth ship to carry the name HMS Echo was a wooden
paddle vessel. Built at Woolwich Dockyard, launched 28-May-1827, 112ft long, 25ft wide and of 295 tons builders measurement. Laid down as a Cherokee Class vessel and altered on the stocks. Had a theoretical speed of 7.6kts under power. On completion as an experimental vessel her duties for the first few years included, conducting surveys of the Thames and its estuary, despatch vessel and tug. To the Mediterranean as a despatch vessel 1930, then from 1831-36 off the coast of Spain and Portugal. To the West Indies 1836-39 as a despatch vessel and mail packet. Returned to the UK 1840 to end her service as a tug at Portsmouth. Sold Jun-1885. |
