HMS Spartan (1943) CC  (5th) 

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Spartan was an anti-aircraft, light cruiser.

Built by Vickers Armstrong, of Barrow, laid down 21-Dec-1939, launched 27-Aug-1942 and commissioned 10-Aug-1943.

On completion served with the Home Fleet 1943 after which she went to the Mediterranean 1944.

While off the Anzio beachhead 29-Jan-1944 was hit and sunk by an HS293 glider bomb.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1943, Mediterranean 1944, Anzio 1944.
