HMS Rapid (1943) DD  (9th)

    
This the ninth ship to carry the name HMS Rapid was an R Class, destroyer.

Built by Cammell Laird, laid down 16-Jun-1941, launched 16-Jul-1942, and commissioned 20-Feb-1943.

Went to the Eastern Fleet in South African waters. Then in 1944 as the 11th Destroyer Flotilla, to the Indian Ocean, still with the Eastern Fleet, where she remained until 1945, when she returned to the UK.

Used as an Air Target Training Ship and attendant destroyer to aircraft carriers from 11-Apr-1946

Converted to a Type 15 frigate with pennant number F138, from 15-Jun-1951 to Oct-1953 displacing 2,300 tons.

Into reserve 01-Jun-1954.

Sunk in the North Atlantic as a target 03-Sep-1981.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1943, Sabang 1944, Burma 1944-45 and East Indies 1945.
