Armoured Corvette

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Penelope was an armoured corvette.

Built at Pembroke Dock, launched 18-JUn-1867, 260ft long, 50ft wide and of 3,096 tons builders measurement, displacing 4,470 tons. Armed with 8 x in and 3 x 40pdr guns.

Used by the coastguard from 1869, then a guardship at the Cape from 1891.

Finally used as a prison hulk from 1897.

Sold 12-Jul-1912 at The Cape, and broken up at Genoa, 1914.

Won the Battle Honour: Alexandria 1882.
