HMS Bridgewater (1929) SL  (5th)

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Bridgewater was a Bridgewater Class (1929), escort sloop.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie, laid down 06-Feb-1928, launched 14-Sep-1928, and completed 14-Mar-1929.

On completion went to the China station and remained there until Jan-1935 when she went to South Africa for refit. On completion she remained there on what was the Africa station (later renamed South Atlantic Station) until she returned to the UK 01-Sep-1936.

The refit lasted until Oct-1936 when it was back to the South Atlantic Station until she returned once more to the UK on 13-Apr-1939.

At the outbreak of WW2 she was once again on the South Atlantic Station. She undertook mainly convoy escort work in the South Atlantic until Jul-1942 when she went the Tyne for a major refit. After this it was back to Free town, arriving 09-Oct-1942. Convoy work continued until 25-Sep-1943 when she once more returned to the UK for another refit.

By this time she was so worn out that she went the Holy Loch as submarine escort, where she remained for the remainder of WW2.

Paid off Jul-1945.

Used initially for static bomb trials the hulk was transferred to BISCO 22-May-1947 for breaking up.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1942-43 and North Sea 1942.
