HMS Active (1930) DD  (10th)

    
This the tenth ship to carry the name HMS Active was an A Class, destroyer.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie, Laid down 10-Jul-1928, launched 09-Jul-1929, and commissioned 09-Feb-1930.

Took part in the King George V Silver Jubilee Fleet Review 16-Jul-1935.

At the start of WW2, Active was at Gibraltar with the 13th Destroyer Flotilla. Then in early 1941 move to home waters and the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla and the Home Fleet.

Early 1942 it was back to Gibraltar to join Force H.

March 1942 saw her support the invasion of Madagascar where in company with HMS Panther she sank the French submarine Monge.

Aug-1942 while in the South Atlantic she sank U-170.

Following her return from the South Atlantic she operated on the Sierra Leone convoy route in 1943. When she sank the Italian submarine Leonardo Da Vinci May-1943 and U340 in Nov-1943.

She ended WW2 in the Mediterranean.

Sold 20-May-1947.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939-44, 'Bismarck' 1941, Diego Suarez 1942 and Arctic 1944.
