This the sixth ship to carry the name HMS Salisbury was a Town
Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers
for bases agreement. Originally the USS Claxton DD140, built at Mare Island Naval Yard, laid down 25-apr-1918, launched 15-Jan-1919, commissioned in the US Navy 13-Sep-1919, commissioned in the Royal Navy 05-Dec-1940 and renamed. Arrived at Devonport for refit 05-Dec-1940 which lasted until 03-Mar-1941. On completion joined first the 2nd Escort Group then the 4th Escort Group. Refitted at Rosyth 26-Oct-1941 and on completion served as a special escort for specific convoys. Joined the Western Local Escort Force at Halifax Sep-1942 and later refitted at Charleston, North Carolina Nov-1942 to Jan-1943, then later at Boston from 06-Apr-1943 to 12-Jun-1943. Paid off at Halifax 10-Dec-1943 and was offered to the US Navy as source for spares but this was declined. Listed for disposal 22-Apr-1944 and sold 26-Jun-1944 in Canada. Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1941-43.
