HMS Richmond (1940) DD  (6th)

    
This the sixth ship to carry the name HMS Richmond was one of fifty destroyers sold to the Royal Navy in 1940 as part of the Destroyers-for-bases agreement with the United States.

Originally the USS Fairfax DD93, built Mare Island Naval Yard, laid down 10-Jul-1917, launched 15-Dec-1917, commissioned in the US Navy 06-Apr-1918, commissioned in the Royal Navy 05-Dec-1940 and renamed.

Arrived at Devonport for refit 01-Feb-1941 having been delayed by defects. Having completed these repairs and working up grounded at Holyhead on her way to Liverpool. Repairs at Southampton took until Jun-1941 to complete, after which she joined the 17th Escort Group with the Newfoundland Escort Force.

Returned to Cardiff for a long refit which began 29-Oct-1941. On completion her first convoy escort was with PQ14 to Iceland. During this she collided with USS Francis Scott Keys and suffered severe damage. She was towed to Iceland for temporary repairs and towed on to Liverpool for full repairs.

After these were completed joined the Western Local Escort Force at Halifax on 01-Sep-1942. In Feb-1942 after another collision, this time with HMS Reinholt, required repairs at Liverpool which took from 18-Feb to 31-May-1943. The returned to Canada and escort duty until Dec-1943 when she returned to the UK to be paid off at the Tyne.

Allocated to Russia in lieu of Italian tonnage, and after refit was loaned to the Soviet Navy 16-Jul-1944 and renamed Zhivuchi

Returned to the UK at Rosyth 24-Jun-1949, sold 12-Jul-1949 and broken up at Grangemouth.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1941-43 and Arctic 1942.
