HMS Magpie (1943) SL  (7th)

    
This the seventh ship to carry the name HMS Magpie was a Modified Black Swan (1942), escort vessel (sloop).

Built by Thornycroft, laid down 30-Dec-1941, launched 24-Mar-1943 and completed 30-Aug-1943.

On completion served as convoy escort in the North Atlantic. Sank U-592 on 31-Apr-1944 then U-238 on 09-Feb-1944.

Moved to the Russian convoy route Mar-1944 and sank U-961 on 29-Mar-1944.

Took part in Normandy and English Channel operations. Then it was back to the North Atlantic for a short time, followed by support work in UK waters until the end of the war in Europe.

Refitted at Portsmouth May/Jun-1945 then moved to the Mediterranean, Remained there until 1954 when she returned to the UK.

Appeared at the Coronation Review 1953.

Final service was in the South Atlantic and paid off at Devonport late 1956.

Listed for disposal 09-Jul-1959 and broken up at Blyth.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1943-44, Normandy 1944 and Arctic 1944.
