This the fourth ship to carry the name HMS Essex was a fifth rate, 42-gun, ship.

Originally American, captured 28-Mar-1814 by HMS Phoebe off Valparaiso. 139ft long, 37ft 6in wide and of 867 tons builders measurement.

Used as a convict ship from Oct-1823.

Sold 06-Jul-1837.
