Swiftsure Class (1872) BB

This class of battleship were very similar to the Audacious Class (1870), except they had a single screw, and were designed to have a good performance under sail.

They were the last of the smaller ironclads, and also the last to have main guns of less than 10in.

They were fitted with hoisting propellers, whose concept was about to be phased out. These were intended to reduce drag while under sail. In fact both ships had an excellent performance under canvas.
