Audacious Class (1870) BB

This class of Ironclad battleships were the first to be built as a class, and were designed as smaller second-class ships for service on foreign stations.

As such they were required to have a reasonable performance under sail, as coal was less easily obtained abroad, and some distances involved were large. This meant they had a very large sail area for their size.

The main armament was concentrated in a very short, two-decked, central armoured battery. This meant the guns were least affected by the ship's motion, so they were very good gun platforms.
