Dreadnought Class (1879) BB

HMS Dreadnought was completed as a class of one.

The name Dreadnought has always signified a ship of major importance in the development if warships. Whether it is this ship, the Dreadnought of 1906, or the first British nuclear powered submarine.
This Dreadnought was a follow on to the design of the Devastation Class (1873), but emerged as a better balanced ship and an example for later designs to follow.

She was the first battleship to have triple compound engines, and the last battleship to have overall armour. She established that steam engines were a reliable, long-range method of propulsion, and that the requirement for ships-of-the-line to carry sails was obsolescent.
