HMS Ulster (1944) DD  (2nd)

    
This the second ship to carry the name HMS Ulster was a U Class (1943), destroyer.

Built by Swan Hunter, laid down 12-Nov-1941, launched 09-Nov-1942, and commissioned 27-May-1943.

On commissioning served in the Channel, then Jun-1944 completed operations as part of the Normandy landings.

After this it was on to the Mediterranean and duty in the Adriatic.

To the East Indies Early 1945, before moving to the British Pacific Fleet.

Damaged by the near miss of a kamikaze attack 01-Apr-1945, and towed to Leyte by HMS Gambia. Temporary repairs were completed by the US Navy and she returned to the UK Aug-1945 for full repair.

Converted to a Type 15 frigate 1954-56 with the pennant number F83.

Used as a navigation training ship 1967 then Plymouth harbour training ship 1977.

Sold 04-Aug-1980 and broken up at Inverkeithing.

Won the Battle Honours: English Channel 1943, Adriatic 1944, Mediterranean 1944, Normandy 1944, Okinawa 1945.
