HMS Tracker (1943) CVE  (1st)

    
This the first ship to carry the name HMS Tracker was an Attacker Class, escort carrier.

Built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding at Seattle, laid down as the merchant vessel Mormacmail. Taken over and completed as the sixth escort carrier BAVG6, intended to be used by the Royal Navy.

Launched 07-Mar-1942, completed and commissioned in the Royal Navy 31-Jan-1943.

Arrived in the UK 04-Jun-1943 via Casablanca where she had transported US aircraft. Modifications to RN standards followed and on 15-Aug-1943 was allocated to Western Approaches Command.

Served as a deck landing training carrier then operationally in the Atlantic until Mar-1944, when she went to the Arctic for Russian convoy escort duty. Duty in these two areas continued with a short break in Jun-1944 for the Normandy landings.

Loaned to the US Navy Nov-1944 for use as a ferry carrier and was used for this work in the Pacific from Jan/Jul-1945.

Returned to the UK at the Clyde Aug-1945 and was de-stored.

Returned to the US Navy 29-Nov-1945 at Norfolk, Virginia.

Sold as the merchant vessel Corrientes  and broken up at Antwerp 24-Sep-1964..

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1943-44, Arctic 1944 and Normandy 1944.
