The sixth and current HMS Southampton was built by Vosper-Thorneycroft (UK) Ltd at Southampton. She is a Type 42 Class
Destroyer, one of the second batch to be ordered.
She was laid down on 21-October-1976 (Trafalgar Day), launched on 29-January-1979, and commissioned 31-October-1981. Her initial trials period was cut short by the Falklands War in June 1982, just a few days before the Argentine surrender at Port Stanley. An unfortunate highlight was when she collided with a container ship the MV Torbay near the Straits of Hormuz. Extensive repairs were required, which were completed at Swan Hunters in 1991. She underwent an extensive refit from January 1998 to May 1999 at Babcock Rosyth Defence Ltd. Another refit took place at Portsmouth from July 2003 to February 2004. Took part in the Trafalgar 200 Fleet Review. Paid off at Portsmouth 12-Feb-2009. |
