This the ninth ship to carry the name HMS Serpent was a
Torpedo Cruiser. Built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 09-Nov-1885, launched 10-Mar-1887 and completed Mar-1888. On completion went into reserve at Devonport 1888-90 except for being activated for annual manoeuvres 1888 & 1889. Left for the Cape Station 1890 but was wrecked off the northern coast of Spain 10-Nov-1890.
