HMS Sandwich (1929) SL  (6th)

    
This the sixth ship to carry the name HMS Sandwich was a Bridgewater Class (1929), escort sloop.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie, laid down 09-Feb-1928, launched 29-Sep-1928, and commissioned 23-Mar-1929. 250ft long, 34ft wide and displacing 1,043 tons.

On commissioning served on the China Station until the start of WW2.

Continued in the far East for a short time and returned to the UK in late-Dec-1939. After a short refit, escorted Gibraltar convoys until May-1940. Escort work in the Atlantic followed until she went for refit from Dec-1940 to Apr-1941. Convoy escort work continued in the Atlantic, Gibraltar, and Freetown routes until Oct 1942.

On 31-Jul-1942 while escorting convoy OS 35 sank U-213.

In Oct 1942 took part in Operation Torch, the Invasion of North Africa. Remaining based at Gibraltar until she returned for refit on the Tyne on 02-Jul-1943. Convoy work on the Gibraltar and Freetown routes continued until Nov-1944, when she went for refit at Brindisi. Refit continued at Gibraltar until Jan-1945 when she was reduced to Care and Maintenance. Worn out by her war work.

Feb-1945 moved to Bizerta and remained there until sold 08-Jan-1946.

Won he Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939-44 and North Africa 1942.
