HMS Matabele (1939) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Matabele was a Tribal Class, destroyer.

Built by Scotts, laid down 01-Oct-1936, launched 06-Oct-1937, commissioned 25-Jan-1939.

On completion Matabele joined the 6th Flotilla with the Home Fleet.

Early WW2 work included the Norwegian campaign, followed by north sea strikes against German shipping off Norway.

1941 was spend mostly in arctic waters.

Torpedoed and sunk 17-Jan-1942 by U-454 in the Barents Sea, with only 2 survivors.

Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940 and Arctic 1941-42.
