HMS Inglefield (1937) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Inglefield  was the destroyer leader of the I Class (1937) DD  destroyer flotilla.

Built by Cammell Laird, laid down 29-Apr-1936, launched 13-Oct-1936 and commissioned 25-Jun-1937.

Served with the Home Fleet and in Feb-1940 assisted in the sinking of U-63. Then went on to operations during the Norwegian Campaign and repairs to battle damage meant she did not take part in Dunkirk operations.

In August she moved south and took part in Dakar operations where she received damage from shore batteries.

1941 saw operations in the Hunt for the Bismarck and the raid on Petsamo.

1942 saw escort duty in the 'Wasp' aircraft transport operations to Malta.

Then it was a period of Arctic convoy escort until early 1943.

In Apr-1943 joined the 4th Support Group in the North Atlantic. After which it was back to the Mediterranean in time for the landings at Sicily Salerno and Anzio.

At Anzio on 25-Feb-1944, she was hit and sunk by a radio-controlled glider bomb dropped from an aircraft.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939-43, North Sea 1940, Norway 1940-42, 'Bismarck' 1941, Malta Convoys 1942, Arctic 1942-43, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Anzio 1944 and Mediterranean 1944.
