HMS Diadem (1944) CC  (5th)

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Diadem was an anti-aircraft, light cruiser.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie of Hebburn, laid down , 15-Dec-1939, launched 26-Aug-1942, and commissioned 06-Jan-1944.

On completion served on Arctic convoy escort, and covered carrier raids against the German battleship Tirpitz in early 1944.

June-1944 was part of Force E, covering Juno Beach during the Normandy landings.

Then she carried out offensive patrols around the cost of Brittany, where in company with other destroyers she sank the German ship Sperbrecher 7 off La Rochelle on 12-Aug-1944.

Then returned to northern waters, again covering carrier raids off the Norwegian Coast and arctic convoy escort.

After WW2, remained with the 10th Cruiser Squadron with the Home Fleet until 1950.

Sold 29-Feb-1956 to the Pakistani Navy. Renamed PNS Babur 05-Jul-1957.

Converted to t cadets training ship 1961.

Renamed Jahangir 1982.

Paid off 1985.

Won the Battle Honours: Arctic 1944-45, Normandy 1944, Biscay 1944 and Norway 1945.
