HMS Dauntless (1918) CC  (4th)

    
This the fourth ship to carry the name HMS Dauntless was a light cruiser.

Built by Palmer, laid down 03-Jan-1917, launched 10-Apr-1918, and commissioned 26-Nov-1918.

After completion went to the Baltic 1919. The went to detached duties in the West Indies.

Joined the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, in the Atlantic from 1919 to 1924

After the Empire Cruise of 1923/24 she went to the Mediterranean and the 1st Cruiser Squadron for about two years. Then into reserve.

Re-commissioned on 15-May-1928 and joined the 8th Cruiser Squadron in the America and West Indies Station. But on 02-Jul-1928 ran aground on the Thrum Cap shoal off Halifax, Nova Scotia and was badly damaged. All guns, torpedo tubes, funnels together with much other equipment had to be removed before she could be re-floated.

Repairs took until 1929 after which she went into reserve.

Returned to the America and West Indies Station 1930, and then on to the South American Division 1931/32. Relieved HMS Curlew in the Mediterranean when she joined the 3rd Cruiser Squadron in 1934. She remained in the Mediterranean until 1935, when she again went into reserve until 1939.

At the start of WW2 was with the 9th Cruiser Squadron in the South Atlantic Command. Then in Dec-1939 the Squadron went to the China Station.

Formed part of the British Malaya Force in Mar-1941. After colliding with HMS Emerald off Malacca on 15-Jun-1941, repairs at Singapore took until Mid-August.

Returned to home waters early 1942 for refit at Portsmouth. After which she returned to the Eastern Fleet for 1942/43.

Became a training ship for the rest of the war and was reduced to reserve Jan-1945. 

Sold for scrapping 13-Feb-1946, and broken up at Inverkeithing, Apr-1946.

Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1939.
