This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Charybdis was an
anti-aircraft, light
cruiser. Built by Cammell Laird of Birkenhead, laid down 09-Nov-1939, launched 17-Sep-1940, and commissioned 03-Dec-1941. On completion joined the Home Fleet and until Apr-1942 when she went to Gibraltar with Force H. Covered several operations to reinforce fighter aircraft to Malta. Also took part in the Pedestal and Harpoon Malta convoys. In Nov-1942 was with Force O as part of the Eastern Task Force covering the Torch Landings in North Africa. Took part in the Salerno landings Sep-1943, after which she returned to home waters at Plymouth. Torpedoed and sunk 23-Oct-1943 by German torpedo boats T23 and T27 during a night action of the north coast of Brittany. Won the Battle Honours: Malta Convoys 1942, North Africa 1942, Salerno 1943, Atlantic 1943, English Channel 1943, Biscay 1943.
