Ocean was completed as a single ship class, designed as an amphibious
helicopter carrier.
The concept was to provide the amphibious assault capabilities previously given by the Commando carriers HMS Albion and Bulwark. The primary role of the ship is to carry an embarked military force and support it using 12 medium helicopters, 6 attack helicopters and 4 landing craft vehicle personnel (LCVP). A secondary role includes afloat training, and a base for anti-terrorist operations. The Royal Navy website also lists a secondary limited role of an anti-submarine warfare platform. But this would have to be dubious given the value of her unique capabilities. Especially considering the loss of HMS Courageous in the opening days of WW2 when she was used in an inappropriate anti-submarine role.
