Landing Ship, Tank Mk3 Class (1944) LST

It was recognised that there was an ongoing need for British tank landing ships after US lend-lease ended. So by mid-1943 the opportunity was taken to make improvements to the Mk2 design which had been kept unchanged.

British staff drew up a new specification and placed orders in British and Canadian yards. The ships were intended to become available by early 1945.

British built ships were given numbers from 3001 and Canadian built ones were numbered from 3501.

With the ending of the war 46 were cancelled before completion.
