Landing Ship, Tank Mk2 Class (1942) LST

Shortly after the USA entered WW2 and the fact that British yards were at full stretch it was decided that production of the larger tank landing ships would be concentrated in the USA and smaller landing craft would be constructed in the UK. This split also allowed best use of US production line construction methods.

Therefore a joint Anglo-US team took the existing design and improved it. About 1,000 LST's were eventually built and served with the US, British and Canadian Navies.

A total of 115 ships were transferred to the Royal Navy under Lend-lease with 14 lost. The remainder were returned to the USA between 1945 and 1947.
