Scout Class (1887) CC

The two ships of the Scout Class were the Royal Navy's first torpedo cruisers.

In the late 1800's the newest weapon was the torpedo, but until the effective development of the submarine, early torpedo vessels had a near suicidal task to close the enemy, fire torpedoes and escape. So the torpedo attacker had to present themselves as the smallest target for the shortest time.

Torpedo cruisers were an attempt to develop an ocean going torpedo carrier. But while they were able to go anywhere they were too slow to perform a torpedo attack with any realistic chance of success.

Armour protection was limited to the deck over the machinery spaces. But was improved by having wing coal bunkers and good internal subdivision.

The original 5in BLR guns were replaced with 4.7in quick-firing guns.
