Iris Class (1879) CC

The Iris Class were originally designed as a class of two Dispatch Vessels, which were later re-rated as 2nd Class Cruisers.

They were the Royal Navy's first all-steel ships and were the fastest ships of their time.

In common with most ships they had a sailing rig but this was only for traditions sake as they were genuine steam ships. The sailing rig was progressively reduced and finally completely removed.

Although their hulls were unarmoured extensive internal subdivision gave flooding protection.

Shortly after completion Iris original outfit of guns was changed and in both ships changed again in 1888 to a common 5in armament.

Mercury had a straight bow and so was slightly shorter than Mercury
