Gem Class (1904) CC

The four ships of the Gem Class (1904), were 3rd Class, Protected Cruisers. The first two being part of the 1902 construction programme and the last two, the 1903 programme.

Although 3rd Class ships they were intended to operate with the fleet and so were larger, faster and better armed than previous class of 3rd Class cruisers, the Pelorus Class (1897).

The first ship to be laid down was HMS Topaze and they are sometimes known as the Topaze Class.

HMS Amethyst was the first cruiser to be powered by steam turbines, all the others were powered by reciprocating engines.
