| The
four ships of the Drake Class (1903) Armoured Cruisers were enlarged
versions of the Cressy Class
(1901) with the increased size devoted to more the powerful machinery
required to increase speed to 23kts. They were part of the 1898 construction
programme. On completion they were one of the fastest warships in the world and often exceeded their trial speed in service. They were usually used as the Flagships of Cruiser Squadrons.
