Blake Class (1892) CC

The two ships of the Blake Class were 1st Class Protected Cruisers, part of the 1887 construction programme.

They were the largest cruisers built to date, and the fastest, with a design speed of 22kts. The large increase in power needed for this required a long hull, and they were longer than the Royal Sovereign Class battleships. However the design speed could only be achieved with an unrealistic degree of forced draught, so in practice their top speed was 20kts.

Following the mass axing of 1905, they became destroyer depot ships, finally being paid off in the 1920's.
