Description The action took place off Valparaiso, Chile.

At 0410hrs HMS Phoebe engaged the USS Essex at long range and after a short time the USS Essex moved out of range. Firing continued at 0535hrs, and Essex tried to close with the shore and land valuables and her crew

By 0620hrs she had struck her colours and 16 of her crew were saved from the sea. About 31 were missing and 3-to 40 reached the shore.

(In a parallel action HMS Cherub took the companion ship USS Essex Junior.)
