Royal Alfred Class (1867) BB

The Royal Alfred was a Class of one, and another conversion from a wooden hulled ship which was converted during construction into an ironclad.

Her completion was delayed until the earlier conversion had been tried at sea.

She was similar to both Royal Oak and Zealous in layout but mounted a more powerful main armament, had thicker armour, and her guns were concentrated in a central battery rather than a broadside.

She handled well under sail and was as fats under sail as under steam.
