Repulse Class (1870) BB

HMS Repulse built as a class of one. She was the last of the wooden-hulled designed ships to be converted during construction to an ironclad.

Although laid down in 1859 at the same time as HMS Royal Oak (1862), the first of the wooden-hulled conversions, work stopped for a number of years. By the time construction was completed her protection was far behind the standards of the day and she had no place in the main fleets. So she spent most of her active service in the Pacific.

Her guns were concentrated in a central battery. This left lots of space in the main deck for accommodation, which was of a high standard for the times.

Was the last major warship to be built at Woolwich Dockyard.
