Alexandra Class (1877) BB

HMS Alexandra was built as a class of one.

Although she was built while the revolutionary Devastation Class (1873) ships were also under construction. Traditionalists still stuck to the old formula of the broadside armed, fully rigged sailing ship, of which Alexandra was one.

Nevertheless she was a very successful design. Her main guns were carried in a central battery, but some of the guns could also fire fore and aft. With twin screws and more efficient compound steam machinery, her sailing rig was not necessary. But it was not until 1889 that her masts were reduced and sails removed.

She was a handsome ship and served much of her active career as a Flagship.
