HMS Roxborough (1940) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Roxborough was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Foote DD169, built by Bethlehem Steel of Fore River, laid down 07-Aug-1918, launched 14-Dec-1918, commissioned in the US Navy 21-Mar-1919, commissioned in the Royal Navy 22-Sep-1940 and renamed.

Arrived at Devonport for refit 27-Dec-1940 which completed 18-Mar-1941. Then joined the 2nd Escort Group for convoy escort work and transferred to the 4th Escort Group Jun-1941.

Refitted on the Clyde 27-July to 22-September then joined the Western Local Escort Force at Halifax.

In Jan-1943, while escorting convoy HX222 encountered very heavy weather which stove in the entire bridge structure. Killing eleven including the Captain and first officer plus many others injured. The sole surviving executive officer was a young RCNVR officer who was aft at the time the damage was received. He managed to regain control and using hand-steering from aft made St. Johns, Newfoundland. Repairs at Charleston, South Carolina took until 15-Apr-1943 when she returned to escort duty at Halifax.

Returned to the UK 10-Jan-1944 to be paid off at the Tyne. Recommissioned and loaned to the Russian Navy 10-Aug-1944 and renamed Doblestni in lieu of Italian tonnage.

Returned to the Royal Navy at Rosyth 07-Feb-1949.

Sold 05-Apr-1949, and broken up at Dunston.

Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1941-43.
