HMS Ripley (1940) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Ripley was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Shubrick DD268, built by Bethlehem Steel of Squantum, laid down 03-Jun-1918, launched 31-Dec-1918, commissioned in the US Navy 03-Jul-1919, commissioned in the Royal Navy 26-Nov-1940 and renamed.

Arrived at Devonport for refit 27-Dec-1940 which was completed 13-Feb-1941. Unfortunately that day she was in collision with HMS Burwell and the trawler Notre Dame de France, which required further repairs which took until 03-March.

After a short patrol joined the 5th Escort Group at Liverpool for convoy escort duty. While on the way to Middlesbrough for a refit ran aground at Farnborough Head 04-Sep-1941.

Temporary repairs were followed by refit at Middlesbrough which took until 15-Mar-1942 to complete. Convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic followed until defects needed temporary repair at Holyhead starting 14-October. Refit at Liverpool followed which took until 19-Mar-1943 to complete.

After this was allocated to Orkney and Shetland Command for local duty.

Paid off into reserve at Tyne 04-Jan-1944.

Sold 20-Mar-1945 and broken up at Sunderland.

Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1941-42.
