HMS Nubian (1938) DD  (3rd)

    
This the third ship to carry the name HMS Nubian was a Tribal Class, destroyer.

Built by Thornycroft, launched 21-Dec-1937, commissioned 06-Dec-1938.

At the start of WW2 was with the Home Fleet. In Jun-1939 was bombed and damaged in the Firth of Forth.

Jun-1940 went to the Mediterranean with Mohawk. Where in Jul-1940 was in action off Calabria. Further action followed off Crete Aug/Sep-1940. Took part in the Taranto raid Nov-1940. Then spent time in the Aegean end-1940/ start-1941.

Took part in the Battle of Cape Matapan as part of the 1st Battle Squadron's screen.

On 16-Apr-1941 while part of Force K, destroyed an Italian convoy of 5 ships, which was being escorted by 3 Italian destroyers.

Sep-1943 covered the Avalanche landings at Salerno.

In mid-1944 was back in home waters with the 10th Flotilla. Saw action before, during and after the Normandy landings.

With the end of war in Europe went to the Indian Ocean and action against light Japanese forces of the coast of Malaya, where she ended the war.

Sold 11-Jun-1949 and broken up by Ward of Briton Ferry.

Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, Calabria 1940, Libya 1940, Mediterranean 1940-43, Matapan 1941, Sfax 1941, Greece 1941, Crete 1941, Malta Convoys 1941, Sicily 1943, Salerno 1943, Arctic 1944 and Burma 1944-45.
