HMS Hesperus (1940) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Hesperus was an H Class (1940) destroyer.

Built by Thornycroft, for the Brazilian Navy (Jurena), laid down 06-Jul-1938, launched 01-Aug-1939, bought 04-Sep-1939, and commissioned 10-Feb-1940 as HMS Hearty.

Renamed HMS Hesperus 27-Feb-1940.

Took part in Norwegian operations, then from 1941 went to the North Atlantic for escort work.

During WW2 assisted in sinking U-357, U-191, U-186 and U-242.

Sold 27-May-1946.

Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, Atlantic 1940-45 and English Channel 1945.
