HMS Clare (1940) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Clare was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Abel P Upshur DD193, built by Newport News Shipbuilding Co, laid down 20-Aug-1918, launched 14-Feb-1920, commissioned in the US Navy 21-May-1920, commissioned in the Royal Navy 09-Sep-1940 and renamed.

After refit, joined the 17th Flotilla Western Approaches Command on 09-Oct-1941.

Early defects meant repairs began at Liverpool 17-November and after a collision with HMS Peterton during trials she was converted to a long range escort. This took from 22-Feb-1941 to 14-Oct-1941.

Joined the 41st Escort Group on the Freetown convoy route. This work continued until she served as convoy escort for convoys for the invasion of North Africa, Operation Torch and follow up convoys. This lasted until July-1943.

Refitted at Cardiff Sep-1943. Repairs took until Jun-1944 due to an onboard fire while the work was being done.

On completion reduced to Air target status Jun-1944.

Paid off and sold 25-Aug-1945 and arrived at Troon 18-Feb-1947 for breaking up.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1940-43, North Africa 1942-43 and Sicily 1943.
