HMS Cairo (1919) CC  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Cairo was a Light Cruiser.

Built by Cammell Laird, laid down 28-Nov-1917, launched 19-Nov-1918 and commissioned 14-Oct-1919.

Took part in the King George V Silver Jubilee Fleet Review 16-Jul-1935.

Went to the China Station in 1920 to join the the Light Cruiser Squadron. Then to the East Indies and the 4th Light Cruiser Squadron on 27-Dec-1921, remaining there until 1925.

Returned to the China Station for a short period, then it was on to the America and West Indies Station until 1928.

After this she went to the Mediterranean as Flagship Rear Admiral (D) from 1928 to 1930.

Returned home for refit which took from 1931 to 1932. Then joined the Home Fleet as Commodore (D) until 25-Nov-1937.

Converted to an Anti-aircraft cruiser at Chatham 1938-39. Joined the Home Fleet 1939-42. To the Mediterranean 1942.

During Operation Pedestal she was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Axum 12-Aug-1942 off Bizerta and had her stern blown off. The wreck was sunk by HMS Pathfinder, next day.

Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, Atlantic 1940-41 and Malta Convoys 1942.
