Description The action took place 58 miles to the west of the Isles of Scilly. The three French ships Tamise, Tribune and La Legere were cruising in company.

At 1300hrs HMS Santa Margarita engaged the French ship Tamise which was sailing with the Tribune and La Legere. At 1620hrs having suffered considerable damage the French ship struck her colours.

In a parallel action HMS Unicorn engaged and captured the Tribune. La Legere escaped.

Tamise lost 32 killed and 19 wounded out of 306 aboard. Santa Margarita lost 2 killed and 2 wounded out of 237 aboard.

Tamise had been captured by the French for 20 months having been renamed from HMS Thames. She was recommissioned into the Royal Navy under her British name HMS Thames.
