| Description |
The action took place about 240 miles North West of Cape Finisterre, Spain
at 46ºN 14ºW. At 1600hrs HMS Virginie sighted a sail to the north-east and gave chase. At 2145hrs the action began and after an hour and a half the Dutch ship Gelderland struck her colours after suffering heavy damage and loss of life. Virginie lost one killed and 2 wounded, Gelderland lost 25 killed and 50 wounded out of a crew of 253..
